Sedation Instructions

IV Sedation: 

Pre-Sedation Instructions: 

  • Patients must fast for a minimum of 8 hours prior to the appointment. Small sips of water are permitted with medication as long as the dentist deems the medications safe to take with the procedure. This is discussed at the consultation appointment so it is crucial that you have disclosed any and all medications to your doctor. It is also imperative that you advise of any medical conditions.
  • Patients must have a BMI of 40 or less and be greater than 12 years of age to receive IV sedation.
  • Patients must have a ride arranged with a responsible adult and the responsible adult must stay with sedated patient for 12 hours post procedure(taxi alone or walking alone not permitted).
  • Wear loose and comfortable clothing and ideally a short sleeved shirt.
  • You must arrive 15 minutes early to your appointment.
  • Do not consume alcohol or recreational drugs the evening prior.

Post-Sedation Instructions: 

  • Patient will be discharged into the care of the responsible adult
  • The patient must remain with the responsible adult for 12 hours post sedation, who must be provided with post-sedation instructions verbally and in written form.
  • Patients are considered under the influence for 24 hours and not permitted to drive, work or make any important decisions within this period.
  • Do not take recreational drugs, cold medicine, or use alcohol within these 24 hours
  • You must have a ride arrive 30 minutes prior to the appointment end time, they must come up to our office as they need to have post-operative instructions reviewed with them. Under no circumstances can you drive, take a taxi or transit home.
